The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Armor) Charles August Newman (ASN: 0-1290461), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Executive Officer, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 24 May 1951 while leading the point of an Armored Task Force from Yongnae-ri, to the Choyland River, Korea. On that date the column met intense enemy small arms and mortar fire and made it apparent that if the task force was to be successful in reaching the objective it would have to move rapidly in order to deny the enemy the opportunity to place an ambush. On every occasion when the enemy resistance caused the column to halt, Major Newman, with utter disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to lead the tanks in directing their fire. Through his aggressive leadership the task force was successful in reaching their objective making possible for the main body that followed to close through the gap. The gallant conduct and inspiring leadership displayed by Major Newman on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
