The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Gilbert J. Newfield (ASN: US-56072845), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 17 July 1952, the 1st Platoon of Company E, 2d Battalion, of which Sergeant Newfield was a member, was assigned the mission of assaulting the enemy outpost “Cavite” near Koyangdae, Korea. As the platoon neared its objective, it was met with a deadly hail of enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire which immediately resulted in several friendly casualties. Sergeant Newfield, with complete disregard for his personal safety, dashed to within three yards of an enemy machine gun emplacement and hurled grenade after grenade into the hostile position until it was completely destroyed. Maneuvering under the lethal enemy fire, he sought out other enemy positions, firing accurately and rapidly into the hostile emplacements. He then assisted in laying down a heavy blanket of fire while the remainder of the platoon advanced. When the platoon was ordered to withdraw, Sergeant Newfield carried a wounded man across 130 yards of shell-torn terrain to an evacuation point. Sergeant Newfield’s outstanding gallantry and selfless actions were responsible for numerous enemy casualties and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
