The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Earl D. New (ASN: RA-16311747), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in Korea. On 24 July 1950 near Yongam-ni, Korea, the squad to which Private First Class New was assigned was in position on the forward slope of a hill. Despite repeated attacks by a numerically superior enemy and although he was wounded Private First Class New refused to withdraw. His loyalty, courage and determination inspired his comrades to repel the enemy attacks. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
