The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Morris S. Nelson (ASN: RA-17286276), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 24 April and during the early morning hours of 25 April 1953, elements of Company F, 2d Battalion, were defending their positions on Outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea, against a numerically superior hostile attack which was preceded by a mortar and artillery barrage. During the initial phases of the onslaught, it was necessary for friendly troops to withdraw to more tenable positions. Sergeant Nelson, realizing that the situation was critical, left the comparative safety of his platoon command post to form a counterattacking force. Although the friendly positions were being subjected to intense artillery fire, he moved about the shell torn terrain to organize his men and lead them in an attack which dislodged the foe and forced them to withdraw. Upon reaching the summit of the hill, he exposed himself to hostile fire as he checked the positions of his men and directed their fields of fire. As a result of his actions, the friendly elements were enabled to retake the outpost, suffering a minimum of casualties. Sergeant Nelson’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
