The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Kenneth R. Nelson (ASN: RA-13350564), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company G was attacking heavily fortified enemy positions. While leading his squad, Corporal Nelson encountered heavy enemy resistance, but continued to advance, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. During the ensuing action, heavy fire from a hostile machine gun emplacement inflicted many casualties upon the friendly troops and in an effort to dispose of it, Corporal Nelson received a painful wound. With complete disregard for his personal safety and the hostile fire, he continued the assault and succeeded in destroying the emplacement and killing its crew. As a result of his fearless action, friendly units were able to secure their objective successfully. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Nelson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
