The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Eubie Nelson (ASN: RA-34700409), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 21 March 1953 in the vicinity of Nudae, North Korea. On that date, Sergeant Nelson was a member of a patrol which, upon observing the approach of a large enemy force, immediately prepared an ambush. Immediately upon making contact with the enemy the platoon leader was wounded and Sergeant Nelson assumed command. Displaying outstanding tactical skill, he directed his men into defensive positions and expertly assigned fields of fire. Upon seeing several of his comrades wounded, Sergeant Nelson, with complete disregard for personal safety, charged across the disputed terrain and, using his carbine as a club and throwing grenades, maneuvered into a position from which a comparatively safe evacuation could be effected. After the wounded were safely removed from the fire swept area, Sergeant Nelson adjusted friendly artillery fire upon the enemy’s positions, and ordered the patrol to withdraw. His courageous actions prevented the possible capture of his comrades and was largely responsible for the successful withdrawal to friendly lines with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Nelson reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
