Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 470 (October 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Joseph John Neitzer (ASN: ER-16286837), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the hours of darkness on 4 July 1951, Company B was occupying defensive positions on Hill 586, near Chich-on, Korea, when it was suddenly attacked by a numerically superior enemy employing small arms, automatic weapons and grenades. Private Neitzer, heedless of the intense hostile fire, left his position to obtain additional ammunition for his recoilless rifle. While making a second journey through the hazardous enemy fusillade in an endeavor to repeat the mission, he was mortally wounded. Private Neitzer’s heroic efforts and outstanding gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
