The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] William R. Nealson, United States Army, for gallantry in action as Supply Officer and Instructor of Division Special Units, 41st Division, Philippine Army, in action on 27 December 1941. He volunteered to take charge of a convoy of miscellaneous vehicles to move critically needed supplies to the 42d Infantry Regiment, which was fighting a delaying action against the Japanese south of Manila, and to evacuate wounded. When the convoy was subjected to aerial bombardment, Major Nealson displayed notable leadership and disregard for personal safety in assembling it, calming the personnel, and continuing the journey to a successful accomplishment of the mission.
