The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Paul A. Neale (ASN: RA-1209212), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 August 1951 in the vicinity of Toksangh’on, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Neale, a squad leader, was with a unit which was defending its newly-won position against the savage counterattacks of a numerically superior enemy force. During the ensuing action Sergeant Neale took command of a machine gun. Due to poor visibility, Sergeant Neale was firing point blank at the assaulting enemy who were within twenty-five yards of his position when a stoppage developed in his weapon which could not be remedied by immediate action. Without hesitating and undaunted by the risk involved, Sergeant Neale left his place of comparative safety and crossed the barren terrain through the hail of enemy automatic and small arms fire, secured a new machine gun and re-crossed the fire-swept hillside to his position, set up his gun and launched accurate and devastating fire upon the oncoming enemy causing them to retreat in wild disorder. His courageous actions were highly responsible for his unit being able to maintain its position and as a result of his devotion to his comrades, many lives were saved. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Neale will live forever in the hearts of his comrades.
