The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Frank Arthur Neal (ASN: RA-38753987), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Clearing Company, 24th Medical Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Kuni-ri, Korea, on January 11, 1951. The Clearing Station to which he was assigned was subjected to a heavy attack by eight apparently friendly planes. At the time of the raid, approximately fifty officers and men of the station and an additional twenty-five patients were in the immediate area. While under intense attack from machine gun fire, bombs and napalm, Sergeant Neal with complete disregard for his own personal safety, and with an outstanding display of loyalty and devotion to duty , ran across an open courtyard to display prominently an identifying panel. In this gallant action Sergeant First Class Neal was mortally wounded. His fearless and unselfish sacrifice avoided further loss of life among his comrades and wounded entrusted to his care. Sergeant First Class Neal’s outstanding performance was an inspiration to his comrades and reflects great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Medical Service.
