The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John T. Nappier (ASN: US-54003508), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, the unit was subjected tin intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and grenade fire. Private Nappier, with utter disregard for his personal safety, carried his machine gun and ammunition on to an enemy-held hill and set it in an exposed position in order to place effective fire upon the enemy. He remained in this position, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy until his ammunition was exhausted. Private Nappier then joined his unit in the assault upon the enemy hill, successfully accomplishing its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Nappier reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private First Class John T. Nappier (ASN: US-54003508), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On this date the platoon of which Private Nappier was a member was under attack by a numerically superior and fanatical enemy force. Seeing that his position was about to be overrun, Private Nappier removed his machine gun from its mount, and completely exposing himself to the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, employed a heavy concentration of fire upon the enemy. During this action he was painfully wounded, but refused to be evacuated and continued to inflict numerous casualties upon the hostile force until friendly reinforcements arrived. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Nappier on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
