Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 114 (May 21, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Leonard Napier (ASN: 0-2262417), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 March 1951 in the vicinity of Kyochon-ni, Korea. Company F, attacking enemy positions with two platoons, met intense enemy machine gun fire and was forced to take cover. Lieutenant Napier, leading the reserve platoon, was ordered to advance to the left flank of the company to relieve pressure on the two pinned down platoons. He led his platoon under partial cover of a wooded ridge until he heard the enemy positions. Realizing that because of the enemy’s well-entrenched positions it would be necessary to close with him, he gave the order to fix bayonets and, at the head of his troops, led a charge which overran two hostile machine guns. Twelve of the enemy gunners were killed and the remainder of the force, demoralized by the daring bayonet charge, fled into an open area where they were cut down by rifle fire from the other platoons. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Napier reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
