The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Marvin L. Nance (ASN: 0-62161), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, (then Commanding Officer of Company F), 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 May 1951 in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date Captain Nance was in command of an infantry unit which was under constant and heavy attacks by a numerically superior enemy force. During one of the assaults, the enemy was successful in overrunning the unit on the left flank. While his unit was under continuous hostile attack, Captain Nance personally reconnoitered for new positions and adjusted his defensive positions to protect a vulnerable and exposed flank. During this critical period he voluntarily exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in order to supervise the reorganization of his men. His display of tactical knowledge and skillful planning were directly responsible for saving many casualties and made it possible for the friendly units to defend their positions until ordered to withdraw. His extraordinary courage was a source of inspiration to his men as they fought against overwhelming odds to inflict heavy losses upon the determined hostile force. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Nance on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
