Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 19 (January 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Fleming B. Nance (ASN: RA-39232489), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his unit was advancing toward the Naktong River. The advance of the company was halted by the well-entrenched enemy who occupied commanding ground and were supported by mortar and machine gun fire. Sergeant Nance, leader of the support rifle platoon, immediately led his unit in a flanking maneuver and succeeded in reaching a position from which he could deliver flanking fire upon the enemy. This enabled the other platoons to continue their advance. Having lost communications with his commanding officer, he moved forward on his own initiative. With complete disregard for his personal safety he led his platoon in a frontal charge up a fire-swept slope, overrunning the enemy and seizing a vital piece of high ground. From this position his platoon delivered a heavy volume of flanking fire upon the enemy, routing a hostile force of approximately company strength. His initiative and inspiring leadership enabled his company to advance against light resistance and undoubtedly prevented serious casualties. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Nance reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
