Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 756 (November 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Francis C. Nagle (ASN: 0-1594353), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Nagle was with a company which had the mission of attacking and securing a heavily fortified enemy stronghold. In the course of this action the leading elements were pinned down by determined small arms fire from an enemy bunker. Lieutenant Nagle, with complete disregard for his own safety, voluntarily exposed himself to the intense hostile fire and assaulted the enemy emplacement. With grenades he succeeded in destroying the bunker, which had impeded the advance of his unit, and inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. His men, inspired by this act of bravery, resumed their attack and successfully completed their assigned mission. His aggressive leadership and dauntless courage were directly responsible for the enemy force being completely routed from its position with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Nagle on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
