The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James F. Nabors (ASN: 0-397813), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 March 1951, in the vicinity of Kwan-to, Korea. On that date his battalion was assigned the mission of attacking an enemy-held hill, which was a key terrain feature. The enemy, from well-concealed positions, was directing a devastating automatic weapons and small arms fire on the forward assaulting elements, halting their advance and pinning them to the ground, Colonel Nabors, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved forward under a withering fire to a position of great danger in order to make a personal observation of the situation and deploy his unit accordingly. Despite the intense fire he remained in this forward position until he was reasonably sure his attack would succeed. He then moved from unit to unit, giving directions and offering words of encouragement to the attacking troops, thereby maintaining the momentum of the attack and the successful attainment of the objective with the minimum of casualties. Colonel Nabor’s extraordinary heroism and selfless devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.

Nabors (ASN: 0-397813), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that day his Battalion was relieving a friendly unit on the line. The relieving companies came under intense enemy mortar and artillery fire, which caused the companies to become disorganized and slowed down the relief. At that time Colonel Nabors was at the Observation Post of the friendly unit. Colonel Nabors, seeing his companies become disorganized by the intense enemy fire, moved from the Observation Post to the location of his companies and personally led each company to its assigned position. During this period almost every foot of ground covered by Colonel Nabors was subjected to intense enemy artillery, mortar end automatic weapons fire. Colonel Nabors, with complete disregard for personal safety, continued to move back and forth leading each company of his Battalion into position, and due to the loss of Officers and Nom-Commissioned Officers, he led and placed some platoons and squads in position. When his Battalion was in place, Colonel Nabors returned to his Observation Post, which was under intense enemy fire, and directed Battalion in laying down a base of fire that greatly assisted the relieved unit to withdraw. Colonel Nabors’ gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
