The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Ellis Eugene Myers (ASN: ER-16242352), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, near San Song-ni, Korea, Private Myers’ platoon was subjected to intense small arms fire from a well-concealed enemy. The order was given to withdraw so that supporting artillery fire could be concentrated on the enemy positions, but heavy fire from an enemy automatic weapon made the withdrawal extremely difficult. With no regard for his own safety, Private Myers stood completely upright and exposed in his position, and, firing his automatic rifle, engaged in a personal duel with the enemy. As a result of this heroic action, the enemy concentrated all his fire on Private Myers’ position and his comrades were then able to make a safe withdrawal. The outstanding courage and devotion to duty displayed by Private Myers reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
