The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles M. Mutersbaugh (ASN: RA-15297284), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 May 1951, in the vicinity of Honchon, Korea. On that day the enemy was counterattacking the 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, on Hill 442. Privat e Mutersbaugh, assistant gunner on a .50 caliber machine gun, was under intense enemy mortar and small arms fire. When the mortar barrage lessened the enemy attacked in large masses. As the enemy advanced, Private Mutersbaugh began firing into their midst and inflicted heavy casualties. An enemy mortar round landed near his position, hurling him from his weapon and wounding him. Despite his wound, he crawled back to the gun and continued firing until relieved. Although he knew he was endangering his life, he remained at the gun to service it, thereby helping to prevent the enemy from breaking through and also giving the other men inspiration to hold the line, turning the tide of battle. His complete devotion to duty, undaunted courage and heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
