The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Alfred O. Musch (ASN: RA-37144079), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 4 July 1951, D Company in defensive positions on Hill 586 near Turyo-Bong, Korea, was fanatically attacked by a large enemy force estimated to be of battalion strength. After a sharp engagement, the enemy was repulsed, but occasional gaps which were rent in the company’s positions had been seized by hostile infiltrators who constituted a dangerous threat to the stability of the unit’s position. Later in the morning, Sergeant Musch organized a group of men for the purpose of clearing out those enemy soldiers occupying the important emplacements. As he led the group toward their objective, the enemy opened fire, but, unheeding the fusillade, Sergeant Musch raced up the hill shooting rapidly at the foe. Spotting a machine gun emplacement, he hurled a grenade which blasted it out of existence; and then, continuing his single-handed charge, Sergeant Musch ran from foxhole to foxhole slaying the cowering enemy soldiers until he had killed eight and taken two prisoners. His daring action removed a serious hazard to his company’s position and enabled a patrol from a neighboring unit to reach Company D with sorely needed ammunition and blood plasma. Sergeant Musch’s gallant aggressiveness and bold conduct reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
