The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Floyd Arthur Murray (ASN: RA-39121106), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 April 1951, near Sochon-ni, Korea, while leading a six-man reconnaissance patrol deep into enemy-held territory, Sergeant Murray observed a position which he believed to be occupied by enemy forces. Concerned with the welfare of his men and unwilling to have the patrol fall into an ambush, he decided to approach the position alone and check the area. Arming himself with an automatic rifle and some hand grenades, he began to crawl toward the enemy position while under the protective fire of the weapons of his patrol. When he had reached a position of approximately 20 yards from his objective, an enemy machine gun burst ripped through his body, mortally wounding him. Before he died, Sergeant Murray raised himself and hurled two hand grenades into the machine gun nest, destroying the weapon and the occupants of the emplacement. His incredible bravery, aggressiveness, and gallant actions were instrumental in preventing the patrol from possible ambush and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
