Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 962 (May 13, 1972)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant William J. Murphy, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Murphy distinguished himself while serving with Company C, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 17 December 1971, at the First Cavalry R&R Center, Vung Tau, Republic of Vietnam. He was swimming on the beach with other members of his company when he observed a soldier being swept out to sea by a powerful undertow and high waves. Without regard for his own personal safety, he unhesitatingly entered the water and proceeded vigorously to the drowning soldier. Although hampered by the strong undertow and great distance, Sergeant Murphy finally reached the man and succeeded in calming him down sufficiently in order to carry him back to the beach. Sergeant Murphy’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
