Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 436 (November 14, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ronald L. Murphy (ASN: RA-16304359), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Corporal Murphy was serving as a squad leader of a unit whose mission was to attack and secure a vital enemy position on Hill 262. As the friendly unit made their way up the forward slope of the hill, they were suddenly subjected to intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, compelling them to seek cover. Upon seeing a wounded comrade lying helplessly in an exposed position, Corporal Murphy, with complete disregard for personal safety, left his concealed position and crossed the fire swept terrain to the site of the wounded man. Realizing his comrade was in dire need of immediate medical attention, Corporal Murphy picked the wounded man up and proceeded back through the devastating hail of enemy shell fire. After leaving his comrade in a place of comparative safety, he then started back toward his own position. After crossing the fire swept terrain and getting within a few yards of his position, he was mortally wounded by an incoming enemy mortar round. His heroic actions, consummate devotion to duty and willing self sacrifice of his life for the life of a comrade, reflect the highest credit upon himself and uphold the esteemed traditions of the military service.
