The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald L. Murphy (ASN: RA-15357956), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 21 September 1950, when Private First Class Murphy returned with an ammunition carrying detail to his platoon on Sobuk-san in Korea, he found it pinned down by the intense automatic weapons fire of the counterattacking enemy. Despite the concerted fire and nearness of the enemy, he stood up and directed devastating fire upon the advancing foe. His courageous and aggressive action inspired his comrades to great effort and enabled them to regain fire superiority to repulse the hostile attack. Private First Class Murphy’s exemplary bravery, steadfastness and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
