Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (December 23, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold R. Murdock (ASN: 0-2210213), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunti-ri, Korea. On the afternoon of this date he was riding in a convoy composted of the command group of the Division which was attempting to break through an enemy roadblock that was approximately five miles in depth. The portion of the convoy in which he was riding was held up and cut off from the rest of the convoy by an enemy machine gun, which made further progress impossible. Several vehicles which had been disabled by enemy fire were also blocking the advance of the convoy. Lieutenant Murdock voluntarily mounted the leading truck of this group and, with complete disregard for his own safety and the enemy fire directed at him, succeeded in pushing the disabled vehicles off the road and clearing a path for the following vehicles. Shortly thereafter a tank arrived and was directed to destroy the enemy automatic weapons. Lieutenant Murdock again exposed himself to the intensified enemy fire directed at the buttoned-up tank to direct it, by arm and hand signals, to a more effective firing position. His conduct under fire was a source of tremendous inspiration to all who witnessed it and he was a major factor in enabling the convoy to continue through the roadblock. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Murdock on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
