The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Ivan H. Munro, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 3 May 1969 while serving as Battalion Senior Advisor, 2d Battalion,, 6th Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, ARVN. On this date the battalion was conducting a combat assault by helicopter near the hamlet Trung Son in Quang Ngai province. Captain Munro was in the command and control helicopter flying over the landing zone, while awaiting the first lift of his battalion, when he observed approximately seven Viet Cong running down a trail toward the landing zone. Because the doorgunner’s machine gun malfunctioned, the command and control helicopter could not engage the Viet Cong. Realizing the Viet Cong could cause numerous casualties and possibly the loss of a helicopter when the first lift of his battalion arrived, Captain Munro requested the pilot to land. Upon landing, with complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly charged the tree line in search of the Viet Cong. Once in the woods he continued up the trail until he engaged them, eliminating one and driving the others back to another tree line farther away from the landing zone. Captain Munro’s bold and courageous actions prevented casualties to his battalion during the initial lift of the helicopter assualt and averted the possible loss of a helicopter. Captain Munro’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflected great credit upon himself and the military service
