The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert Henry Mulholland (ASN: RA-16211413), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 September 1950 in the vicinity of Poncho, Korea. On that date he was assigned the mission of leading his rifle squad to seize a hill forward of his company’s lines. He led his squad against light resistance up the hill and succeeded in driving the enemy from the high ground. While consolidating his newly gained ground, Corporal Mulholland observed a large enemy force armed with light automatic weapons and mortars moving toward his position. He immediately opened fire upon the advancing enemy, forcing them to deploy. In spite of the heavy casualties he inflicted upon them, the enemy continued their assault. Realizing that his position was untenable in the face of the overwhelming odds, he ordered his squad to withdraw. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he undauntedly held his ground and held the enemy off by rifle fire, while his squad withdrew to safety without sustaining a casualty. While engaging in this heroic action, he was killed by hostile fire. The gallantry and self sacrifice of Corporal Mulholland reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
