The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Neil R. Mulhall (ASN: RA-14427245), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 and 18 July 1953 in the vicinity of Chung-Moksil, North Korea. On those dates, Sergeant Mulhall was a member of a reconnaissance patrol when the enemy launched a battalion-sized attack against the Main Battle Positions of Company I. Subjected to intense enemy artillery and mortar fire and in the face of a numerically superior force, the patrol was compelled to fight a delaying action to their own company positions. During this movement, Sergeant Mulhall was instrumental in saving the lives of several comrades by assisting those more seriously wounded to the comparative safety of friendly lines. When the patrol reached their company’s defensive positions, he learned that a sector of the unit had been overrun by the enemy forces. Organizing the remainder of the patrol, he led a spirited assault which carried to the crest of the hill, where he organized a defensive line that aided immeasurably in repulsing the enemy attack. His outstanding leadership and dauntless courage in the face of the enemy was an inspiration to all who observed him and was instrumental in repulsing the enemy. The gallantry in action exhibited by Sergeant Mulhall on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
