The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class William G. Mueting (ASN: RA-37820316), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Company C was attacking a key terrain feature held by the enemy. During the attack, Sergeant Mueting displayed extraordinary courage as he constantly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire, inflicting numerous casualties upon the hostile force. When the friendly troops were ordered to withdraw to more tenable positions, Sergeant Mueting voluntarily and with complete disregard for his personal safety, remained behind and fought a rear-guard action while his comrades evacuated the wounded to positions of safety. He remained in his position until friendly forces had withdrawn safely. His courage and stamina were an inspiration to all who witnessed his actions. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Mueting on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
