The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Harold Vincent Motzko (ASN: RA-17265479), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tal-Lyon, Korea. On that date Corporal Motzko was a member of a reconnaissance patrol advancing toward an enemy infested hill. As the patrol neared the crest of the hill it came under heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire. Corporal Motzko, with complete disregard for his personal safety, advanced toward the hostile positions throwing hand grenades and succeeded in destroying several of them while inflicting numerous enemy casualties. Remaining in his position and fighting a gallant rear-guard action, he enabled the rest of the patrol to withdraw to safety. In his attempt to rejoin his comrades, Corporal Motzko was fatally wounded before he could reach safety. His courageous and selfless actions were an inspiration to all witnessing his deeds and undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing spirit displayed by Corporal Motzko reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
