The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles H. Motte (ASN: 0-970138), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, as the 3d Battalion was proceeding to the line of departure to launch an attack against an enemy-held hill north of Uijongbu, Korea, intense enemy mortar fire was encountered causing the members of the battalion to scatter and take cover. Lieutenant Motte, observing this and realizing the importance of the battalion crossing the line of departure on time, immediately left the comparative safety of the battalion command post and with complete disregard for his own safety, moved among the men directing them to move forward. Inspired by his courage, members of the battalion abandoned their cover and moved out of the mortar barrage. Continuously exposing himself, Lieutenant Motte remained in the area directing supply vehicles between barrages. Later, while moving forward to reconnoiter a new location for the battalion command post, Lieutenant Motte came under sniper fire which was also interfering with communications and supply of the forward elements. Contacting a nearby tank, he deliberately exposed himself to the sniper fire in order to enable the tank crew to locate their position. As a result of this action, two enemy soldiers were killed. The gallantry, courage, and initiative displayed by Lieutenant Motte reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
