The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. Morton (ASN: 0-971656), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 October 1951, near Mago-ri, Korea. At 0900 hours, Second Lieutenant Morton led his men through heavy enemy machine gun fire to the base of the objective. As the platoon advanced, it was suddenly pinned down by fire from an enemy bunker. Exhibiting remarkable courage, Second Lieutenant Morton crawled to the left of the bunker and hurled two grenades into it. As a result of this action, the enemy directed intense fire on his position, mortally wounding him. Second Lieutenant Morton’s magnificent valor inspired his men to continue the assault against overwhelming odds. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Morton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
