The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Ernest J. Morroni (ASN: 33760416), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Battery C, 770th Field Artillery Battalion. When an M-5 tractor hauling a trailer loaded with high explosive ammunition became ignited near Kobsheid, Germany, on 2 March 1945, Technician Fourth Grade Morroni fearlessly assisted in uncoupling the trailer and preventing serious damage to personnel and equipment. Although he realized the burning tractor was also loaded with explosives and that his own life was endangered, he worked with cool courage to protect the lives of his comrades and valuable government property. Technician Fourth Grade Morroni’s heroic actions and unswerving devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
