The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major [then Captain] William R. Morrison, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, Combat Command B, 4th Armored Division, in action on 3 and 4 December 1944. When means of radio communications were knocked out while on a liaison mission with the 71st Combat Team seven miles away, he repeatedly drove his truck on the road between Berg and Bourbacht, under German observation and heavy fires by observed Germany artillery and mortars, to coordinate details of actions between the two commands. Major Morrison’s heroism and disregard for danger on this mission were a material factor in the reduction of Sarre Union.
