The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Wilmer Wilford Morris (ASN: RA-14355353), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the hours of darkness on the morning of 4 July 1951, Company B, 1st Battalion, to which Private Morris’ machine gun section was attached, was in defensive positions on Hill 586, near Talchon-ni, Korea, when it was attacked by a numerically superior foe. The weight of the assault forced the platoon on the left flank to take up new positions and at daybreak, after the attack had been repulsed, it was discovered that small groups of the enemy had infiltrated and were occupying the vacated foxholes. Private Morris volunteered to assist several of his comrades in dislodging the infiltrators in order to regain the positions and establish contact with a friendly patrol. In the brief but bitter encounter which ensued, he personally accounted for four enemy dead and two captured before he was mortally wounded. Private Morris’ inspiring and audacious gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
