Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, General Orders No. 28 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William V. Morris, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Dain, New Guinea, from 21 to 24 February 1944. Lieutenant Morris led an amphibious infantry patrol which landed in enemy territory approximately 20 miles in advance of the Allied lines. Although surrounded by more than 2,000 enemy troops, some of whom came within 20 yards of his position, he reconnoitered enemy activity, installations and equipment. The information thus gained was vital to the conduct of subsequent operations. He then advanced to within hand grenade range, threw grenades at the enemy, and led a final charge in which six of the enemy were killed and 17 were captured. The platoon’s only casualties were two wounded. First Lieutenant Morris’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
