The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Samuel R. Brown (ASN: 1864673), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 322d Infantry Regiment, 81st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grimaucourt, France, 10 November 1918. After having been wounded in the afternoon of 9 November Sergeant Brown had his wound dressed and returned to his platoon through very heavy enemy artillery and machine-gun fire. When his platoon was relieved he returned to the former position through enemy artillery fire to the rescue of a wounded man and assisted him to the rear.
