Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 146 (May 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James H. Morris (ASN: RA-14286397), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, Sergeant Morris was leading his squad in an attack on Hill 337, north of the town of Uijongbu, Korea. While advancing up the slopes, he and his squad were pinned down by intense small arms fire and hand grenades coming from a knoll overlooking their position. Sergeant Morris, having gathered grenades from his men to replenish his own exhausted supply, leaped to his feet and single-handedly assaulted the enemy emplacement in the face of a withering fire. Having utilized his grenades he then courageously continued his charge, firing his rifle into the well-fortified position and completely destroying the occupants. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Morris reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
