By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Claud M. McCall, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 7 August 1918, Lieutenant McCall exhibited courage and daring during the Battle of the Vesle in that he successfully conducted a detachment of men under artillery and machine gun fire across the river Vesle and located and silenced machine gun nests that were delivering a flanking fire into his own organization. Lieutenant McCall in accomplishing this mission was mortally wounded.
