Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 790 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Salvatore C. Mormino (ASN: 0-2039455), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Mormino, a platoon leader, was given the mission of leading his men in the attack upon a well-fortified enemy-held hill. In the ensuing action he led several unsuccessful attacks against the numerically superior hostile force. Reorganizing his unit, he again led his men in the assault with fixed bayonets and hand grenades which so demoralized the oppositions that they were forced to withdraw from the hill. The enemy immediately launched a fierce counterattack and in this action Lieutenant Mormino was wounded but refused to be evacuated. Despite the painful wound, he moved among his men, shouting words of encouragement and directing them in the defense of their positions. He remained with his men until he was ordered to leave. His example of bravery under fire was an inspiration to all the members of his unit and was highly responsible for their success on this occasion. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Mormino reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
