Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 844 (December 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Coray E. Morgan (ASN: 0-1293992), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, [then Company K], 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On that date, during Company K’s attack on well-fortified enemy positions, the enemy launched a counterattack that forced the unit to withdraw and disperse. Lieutenant Morgan, realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, reorganized a group of men and, despite the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, led them in another attack on the hostile positions. After a fierce battle he successfully led his men in securing the vital stronghold. Lieutenant Morgan then reorganized the elements of his unit and, through his superb leadership, led them in the attack on toward the battalion’s main objective. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Morgan on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
