Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 26 (February 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Max A. Moorhead (ASN: 36517173), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 509th Military Police Battalion, on 24 November 1944, in Belgium. Upon hearing the cries for help from a civilian trapped in the basement of a house struck by an enemy bomb, Private First Class Moorhead located an opening beneath a section of a collapsed wall. While digging his way to extricate the victim, the remainder of the wall caved in upon him. Shaken but with undiminished daring, he continued his heroic actions and reached the trapped civilian. Shouting directions to others outside the building, Private First Class Moorhead effected the safe evacuation of the severely injured person. The valor displayed by Private First Class Moorhead is worthy of emulation.
