The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Albert J. Mooney (ASN: RA-11159376), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Wondang-ni, Korea. On that date, Company B had the mission of attacking and securing an enemy held hill. Sergeant Mooney was advancing with his men when his platoon leader was wounded by enemy fire. Unhesitatingly he took command of the platoon and led them on toward the objective. With complete disregard for his own safety Sergeant Mooney stood up in the midst of the firing, pointed out the enemy positions to his men and shouted encouragement to them. Personally charging an enemy emplacement he succeeded in knocking it out and killing three occupants as well as several others in the course of the attack. Upon reaching their objective, the crest of the hill, he set up a perimeter of defense against a possible counterattack. His courage and heroic leadership greatly inspired his men and was invaluable in the successful completion of the mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Mooney reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
