Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 351 (July 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Enriques Montoya (ASN: RA-19259199), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 May 1951, in the vicinity of Tari-gol, Korea. On that date his company was advancing along a road with the mission of clearing high ground of enemy forces, when an enemy delaying force dug in on a knoll, brought the company under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. When his platoon leader was seriously wounded by the first burst of fire, Corporal Montoya, not waiting for the medical aid man to come up from the rear of the platoon, ran through the enemy fire sweeping the area with complete disregard for his own safety and gave first aid to the wounded officer. He carried him to a place of safety in the rear and evacuated him. His heroic action saved the wounded officer from possible death. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Corporal Montoya on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
