The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Forrest A. Monroe (ASN: US-55095383), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 August 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, immediately after crossing the line of departure, Private Monroe’s unit was pinned down by a heavy concentration of enemy small arms and machine gun fire from well-fortified emplacements. Realizing that these positions would have to be destroyed if his unit was to continue the attack, Private Monroe advanced to an exposed position and laid down a hail of accurate fire on hostile positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety and the hostile fire, he continued this action and succeeded in inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy forces while destroying many of their bunkers. In the course of this act, Private Monroe was fatally wounded by the enemy fire. His cool behavior and dauntless courage before the enemy were an inspiration to his comrades and enabled them to withdraw to more tenable positions. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing devotion to duty displayed by Private Monroe reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
