The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Rann E. Monk (ASN: RA-18268334), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company F was attacking vital hill positions defended by a fanatically determined hostile force. As the unit neared its objective intense fire from an enemy machine gun inflicted several casualties upon the assaulting troops and threatened the entire company. Sergeant Monk, with complete disregard for his personal safety, skillfully maneuvered his way through the hostile fire and succeeded in killing the occupants of the emplacements with a well placed grenade. Seizing the enemy weapon, he turned it upon hostile reinforcements ascending the hill. His continuous and deadly fire inflicted many casualties and forced the enemy soldiers to withdraw. His courageous actions inspired his comrades to greater heights of daring and aided immeasurably in the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Monk on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
