The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal August F. Mondin (ASN: RA-13299441), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 September 1950 in the vicinity of Sinban-ni, Korea. While attached to a rifle company with his 75-mm. recoilless rifle squad, Sergeant Mondin deployed his men as riflemen in order to cover the withdrawal of that unit from a hill. While placing his squad in advantageous firing positions, he observed a large hostile patrol approaching with the intention of infiltrating through the defensive perimeter. Instructing his men to hold their fire, he coolly waited for the enemy to advance within range of his weapons. When the enemy force had approached close enough to insure accurate fire, he gave firing orders and immediately opened fire upon the enemy who were to the front of his position. In the ensuing firefight, he exposed himself fearlessly to direct the fire of his men, and so successful was his stratagem that 23 enemy fell under the deadly rifle fire of his squad, 11 of whom were later found to be in front of his own position. The gallantry and skilled leadership displayed by Sergeant Mondin reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
