Headquarters, Far East Air Forces, General Orders No. 422 (December 3, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Airman First Class William Walter Quigg (AFSN: AF-17321162), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Detachment THREE, 15th Radio Squadron Mobile, FAR EAST Air Forces, in action on Cho-do Island in Korea, on 3 April 1953. During a lull in an enemy artillery barrage, Airman First Class Quigg left the safety of his bunker to repair the breaks in the vitally needed communications line which had been damaged by bursting shells. The enemy resumed their barrage, catching him in an open and unprotected area, but Airman First Class Quigg continued his repair of the wire in order to regain communications, until a sergeant at an anti-aircraft gun position nearby was hit by shell fragments. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Airman First Class Quigg carried the wounded man through the enemy fire. During the time of the action, the enemy fired approximately 300 rounds into the surrounding area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Airman First Class Quigg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
