The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private George H. Moffitt (ASN: 11070000), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, on 12 December 1944, near Castelfiorentino, Italy. Attracted by the cries of civilians on the banks of the Elsa River, Private Moffitt observed a woman struggling in the swiftly moving stream. Without hesitation, he plunged into the river, and swam to the rescue. Because of the swift current and the struggles of the drowning woman, he was swept downstream for a distance of three hundred yards before reaching shore. The heroism of Private Moffitt resulted in saving a life, and his performance reflects credit upon himself and the Army of the United States.
