The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Bobbie W. Mitchum (ASN: 0-972244), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 July 1951, in the vicinity of Unchon-ni, Korea. On this day Company B was attacking a well-entrenched enemy on Hill 1100. When the attack materialized, its advance was halted by intense enemy automatic weapons, small arms, and grenade fire. Lieutenant Mitchum, platoon leader, fighting side by side with his men, circulated among them, giving directions and words of encouragement. Although he had been lightly wounded by grenade shrapnel, he refused treatment. His outstanding leadership and skill in deploying his men were instrumental in achieving the objective. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Mitchum reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
