Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 248 (June 9, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Private First Class] Theodore R. Mitchell (ASN: US-56075230), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an assault on Hill 1179, Sergeant Mitchell’s mortar squad was supporting the attack on the main objective when the enemy started to counterattack. The squad was running critically low on ammunition and Sergeant Mitchell, ignoring the enemy small-arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire, crossed the fire-swept terrain to obtain ammunition for his squad. During the enemy counterattack two snipers had infiltrated and were attacking friendly troops from the rear. Sergeant Mitchell, realizing the danger to his men, again moved through the deadly blaze of fire to a bunker which the enemy had recently secured. Armed only with grenades and a rifle he charged the emplacement and killed many of the enemy. As a result of Sergeant Mitchell’s heroic and selfless action the enemy was repulsed and his squad was able to complete their mission of supporting the attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Mitchell reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
